Columbus, you have floor cleaning questions, we have the answers.
Keeping floors clean is an essential part of maintaining them and a healthy home. Flooring technology improves continuously, like waterproof hardwoods and stain resistant carpet, but cleaning is still necessary.
How often should I clean my floors?
The frequency of floor cleaning depends on factors like foot traffic, pets, and personal preference. Generally, high-traffic areas like kitchens and entryways should be cleaned daily or weekly, while less frequently used areas like bedrooms can be cleaned less often. Hard surface areas should be kept clear of dirt, pebbles, and debris to protect from scratching. For carpet, the Carpet and Rug Institute recommends frequent sweeping with an appropriate vacuum cleaner.
How do I remove stains from carpet?
Carpet manufacturers continue to improve carpet and make them more cleanable. Each manufacturer will have instructions on how to handle stains. You should be sure to follow the instructions for your specific carpet and carpet fiber construction. Check the following manufacturer links for more information: Shaw carpet, Dreamweaver carpet, Mohawk flooring.
How do I clean hardwood floors without damaging them?
Avoid using too much water or harsh chemicals on hardwood floors. Use a soft-bristled broom or vacuum to remove dirt and debris. Use a mixture of water and vinegar or a specially formulated hardwood floor cleaner for a deeper clean. Be sure to follow the manufacturer instructions for approved cleaners
How do I maintain the shine on my vinyl floors?
Avoid using abrasive scrubbers or harsh chemicals on vinyl floors. Be sure to follow the manufacturer instructions for approved cleaners. Typically approved cleaners will be PH neutral cleaners. After market products such as floor polishes, etc MAY NOT be approved for use by your flooring manufacturer and may damage your finish layer on the floor. The best way to maintain the original look of your flooring is to keep dirt and grime off the floor, use felt pads on furniture legs, and wash it according to manufacturer specifications.
Can I use bleach to clean my floors?
It's not recommended to use bleach on floors as it can discolor and damage the surface. Instead, use gentle cleaning solutions and avoid harsh chemicals.
